DIY: How to Make Quick Homemade Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent is one of those things we all need to use regularly. So why not get it for cheap? In comes my 5 min. dry laundry detergent recipe....

You will need to mix together:
  • 1 cup Borax ($4)
  • 1 cup washing soda ($3.24)
  • 1 bar of grated Fels Naptha soap ($1)
Also, feel free to add 20 drops of essential oil if you'd like yours to be scented. Shake up ingredients and store inside of a lidded container, and you're good to go. You only need 1 tbsp per load. The mixture above makes 64 loads (for ~$1.94), and you'll still have plenty of Borax and washing soda left over to make more after you run out. Happy (environmentally friendly) washing!

  1. I've thought about making my own laundry detergent so many times, but haven't got to it yet. I've also thought about using "soap nuts" which is supposedly work much better than regular laundry detergent. How do you like this mix?

  3. I like it a lot. It's super easy to make and my clothes come out smelling really fresh and without stains. It works just as well, if not a little better than my old laundry detergent by Mrs. Meyers. If you are into scented clothing however you may want to add some essential oil to the mixture, because without it the clothes do not smell perfumey, just more of a clean spring smell, which I happen to like.

    1. Sounds great. I'm not a perfumey kind of person, so this would be perfect. I might have to try this recipe ;)

  4. Hi! Thanks for popping by so I can find your lovely blog. Vinegar and water is always a goody too. I am fascinated by Baltimore, especially as I just binge watched The Wire - of course they just showed a small section of Baltimore. (we get the same misconceptions here in Oakland which is very beautiful and lovely place to live). There was a really interesting article in the NY TImes last Sunday about a woman who was born in a beautiful old home in Baltimore.

  5. Hello. I just discovered your blog recently, and really enjoyed it. I will have to try vinegar and water sometime. I actually have a trip to SF coming up in a couple of months, and would love to explore Oakland. If you have restaurant or other recommendations of places to check out, please let me know!
