Lake Walker Cape Cod Homes

Cape cod style homes are adorable in my opinion. Originating in New England in the 17th century the design eventually migrated down to Baltimore. Simple homes, cape cods are characterized by a modest size, two and half stories, and little embellishment. The cape cods in Lake Walker are quite charming, and convey that good ole American cottage feel. These are a few of my favorites.

Aren't they darling? I love the way these smaller homes tend to feel so homey. They possess personality, yet require little upkeep. There's something about their simplicity that's truly delightful.

Do you live in a smaller home? How do you like it?

“I believe that smaller houses – where comfort, practicality and beauty co-exist in harmony – represent an idea whose time has truly come....they enhance the quality of life – both in our communities and for those who live in them.” – John Gower

  1. Those cape cods are so charming! I live in a rather larger house, but I dream of living in a smaller house with a perfectly open layout :-)

    1. Yes, I think layout is the key to making a smaller home work.

  2. Sweet homes. I love Cape Cod and Bungalow homes, too, and for pretty much the same reasons you noted. I owned one when my daughters were very young and loved it. I've seen them decorated in cottage-style, formal traditional, and light, airy minimal decor, and every style suited the home. Often times homes in this style felt more spacious inside than I expected, based on the exterior.

    1. I agree, I think they work well with many different decorating styles. I had not been inside of a small cap code until recently and was surprised at how spacious it felt. From the outside it was tiny, but on the inside it was mapped out very efficiently, and thus felt much larger.

  3. I'm in love with #822's fabulous little porch! I could settle in with a good book and an iced tea with no problem!

    Everyone needs a porch!

  4. I live in a 1920's Arts and Crafts bungalow and I love it! Right now it is perfect for my retired husband and myself. But as I look around, I wonder how I raised three rambunctious boys in this tiny space. And with only one bathroom.

My favorite parts of the house are the built-in hutch in the kitchen, the extra closet in one room which has built in shelves and the original hardware on the cabinets, a little worn, but beautiful nonetheless.

    1. Our home was built in the 20s as well. We have our first little one on the way, and I've been wondering how large of a family we can accommodate with our one full bath. It's great to hear you were able to have 3 boys in yours :-) Ideally, I'd like to be like you and retire in our home.

You are so lucky to still have the original built-ins! They just don't make great details like that anymore.
